People will say yes or no to affirm their own biases and no evidence will be provided either way and it ultimately wont matter cuz people who want to enjoy it will and those who don't wont and sales numbers wont affect either experience. Didn't we do this already?

I never used vehicles in DS1 except for the few routes where the highway was done and that usually wasn't till late game (it takes several trips by several people to build them), because I enjoyed hiking the optimal routes I'd worked out throughout my playthrough. It's what drew me to the game in the first place. I'm not a machine that's compelled to play the game a certain way cuz it's faster, I do what I enjoy
