Og anon here. The answer is 488. The number of faces being painted is obviously 600, but there are cubes that have two faces being painted and cubes(corners) with three faces being painted, so you have to account for that to find how many actual cubes are being painted.
i actually managed to solved this problem in one method, then this guy asked me to solve it another method, then a third method. Also no calculators allowed just cuz. I got lost halfway on the second and third, needless to say i didnt get the job.
