There's not even any true meaningful deviations in routing like, say, mega man, its literally just taking the optimal path less optimally, which is a piss poor definition of freedom, I'd say. And here we can identify the actual argument, that you feel shmups are simply too punishing and you want to get to the end no matter how poorly you play. You should be more honest with yourself.
