>tevi gets shit on for not being rabi ribi even though it has more freedom than 90% of metroidvanias and better combat
I agree. It just had the curse of being (often unfairly, like I did) put against Rabi-Ribi in comparison because gemayue worked on it. To be fair even on a surface level it's easy to see why the game would be less appealing. Focus on a grand epic story which resulted in exploration being railroaded (said story left a lot unexplained and was rushed), "female-friendly" character art (CG art was actually great) and dialogue, a lot of budget spent on otherwise elements not necessary for gameplay like iconic Seiyuus.
BUT it had amazing overworld music and encounter design, on top of Tevi being one of the most satisfying characters to control in the genre.
One ironic issue I have with RR is that even with all that free-form exploration you're allowed, overworld monsters are for the most part not threatening at all. TEVI had me think twice and plan around. It also had many difficult locked rooms gauntlet fights. It's my headcanon that silksong devs unironically took inspiration from it.

TEVI is great but lacks something compared to Rabi-Ribi. It mirrors how I currently feel about Silksong and Hollow Knight right now. Silksong, like TEVI, did a few things better but also some stuff way worse.

I hope silksong will make me change opinions by the end but it's unlikely. Bunny love will save the metroidvania genre

Better "movement feel" than Rabi-Ribi
More satisfying physical combat than Rabi-Ribi
Worse, trashier exploration (literally holding your hand tier) than Rabi-Ribi
Worse characters, designs, and dialogue than Rabi-Ribi
Better mob density/challenge in areas than Rabi-Ribi
Worse music than Rabi-Ribi
Worse badge system than Rabi-Ribi
Worse UI
Worse boss battles than Rabi-Ribi
Worse potential for sequence breaking and other cool search action stuff than in Rabi-Ribi

It's very simplified and looks like a negative overview but despite those faults I greatly enjoyed my time with Tevi. It's a good game
