Hostels changed heavily after COVID, the vibe is still mostly there but a lot of the nonchalant atmosphere is gone.

Hostels now are
>Those group of digital nomads trying desperately to not let their boss know they are in a hostel commons room/area while abroad because they think min/maxing through hostel prices is BASED
>Those Ukraine/Russian people who do nothing but sit around and drink while playing videogames 24/7
>Non-Americans who MUST bring up Trump even if you don't want to talk about it
>Clearly on daddy's dime girls who think any hostel = party time BAAAABY!! only to realize 80% are there to shit, shower, and shave followed up by crashing out after a drunken night out.
>Changs who flood in and sit in the same spot for 23hrs 50 minutes only needing to go through their insanely loud plastic bags at 5:15 am
>Old people who clearly lost their investments during COVID by pulling out too early and still want to see the world by any means necessary

Honestly, if you are looking at the value of hostels simply being in a good locations, place to shit/shower/shave, and potentially a option during crunch seasons like xmas and such. Rethink your travel and rebudget.

It's hard to explain, but it's enough to make anyone who's an expat annoyed or skin crawl. I don't know how many conversations I've been in where been having a decent conversation chilling with people only for them or someone in the group to drop that question and that's the only topic they focus on. The entire group will latch onto it and try to find out whatever "secret" they think exists to doing it.

Tell them they need to just say fuck it, going to lose some friendships, going to have to change myself, or need to study more? Nope! there has to be another way
Tell them that being a NEET and living off daddy's money with 15k credit card debt to see things abroad doesn't qualify them for a job? Nope! It does I know someone who did it
Explain that you'll really need to be your own boss, self-motivated, and it's not as glamours as the YT videos? Nope! doing it wrong I know I saw a vlog about it
Show them that working abroad and not for a US company actually is a step down in pay and quality of life? Tiktok didn't say that... Besides ORANGE MAN BAD!

There is nothing more irritating than being abroad and someone asking you "HOW DO I DO UR LIFESTYLE" then hit them with facts and they either zone out in the first 10 seconds explaining it requires work towards it. Or the alternative you get told nuh uh that's not how expats do it, they know they just haven't done it but could and whatever you say is wrong because tiktok/instagram/youtube post said it was easy! They just need you to tell them the ~secret~.

It's hard to explain but it can be a night ender if around the wrong people who won't drop the subject.
>on the way to dokomi
>some american at the con
>won't stop making hitler and ww2 jokes
>keeps talking to these people behind me
>"wow dusseldorf has a history with fire? I thought that was the other place"
>"how you people pack trains is efficient you could move almost 6 million people this way"
>" last time this many germans were focused on something was like 80 years ago on some beach"
wanted to say something to slap his smirk off his face but didn't because I realize americans have to pay for shitty healthcare and high taxes

How is your Day going, what are you looking forward to at dokomi?
