Savage's bolt-action shotguns have rifled bores and are meant only for slugs, typically special slugs with polymer tips. They're essentially extra large bore rifles, 20-Gauge and 12-Gauge, they have some popularity in states only letting you hunt with shotguns.

The box magazine holds 1 or 2 rounds I think, but most users complain that the magazine doesn't tend to want to work. Not a huge deal though since you're probably only taking one shot at a time anyway, and if you hit a deer with a 12-Gauge slug (which you're going to have rifle-like precision with here), you probably won't need to shoot it twice.

>is that if you specifically buy their 220/212 bolt action rifled barreled shotguns for slug hunting the mags don't work and you have to use it single shot
It's what I've heard from owners of those sluggers. Also that they like having such big and heavy projectiles but with rifle precision and range.

I think it's owed to the nature of shotgun shells, the slightly squishy plastic hull and the flat nose just is not very good for box magazines. Even in better box magazines, the hull tends to deform under load over time.
