He was on their board of directors despite having no experience in the oil industry, not speaking Ukrainian or Russian, living on the other side of the planet, having a history of criminal offenses, and being described as "an idiot" by the President of Burisma.

If you think he was being paid that money for any reason other than a bribe to his father then you're a gullible idiot. The Burisma oil company has oil fields in Donetsk and Luhansk that they would have likely lost if those provinces seceded from Ukraine. They had a direct financial incentive in having the United States help Kiev maintain control over the provinces that wanted to leave and that's what Biden did. Now we have a war that's killed a million people.
