Way I did it? In High School I did pretty much every after school activity as an excuse to not go home, which got me along with a wide swath of people. After High School, whenever I got a new job I found one guy I got along with (via similar interests or just getting along), stuck with him like glue, and essentially using him as a springboard to make friends with others. A little social maneuvering takes you a long way, trust me on that.
