I've recently read the first two books of the Thrawn Trilogy. I'm not super impressed by it, but there's a lot of stuff in there that could have been used for the sequel movies. Some of it would even make more sense with the new canon. The whole katana fleet thing would work great as a lost seperatist fleet of automated droid ships for example.
The basic premise of Thrawn's rise also makes sense militarilly and historically: After the Empire lost it's central leadership a succesful frontier commander takes control of the remnants and augments his force with native alien allies he's cultivated in the outer rim.
But maybe don't make our hero Han Solo a racist lol.
