I haven't watched the anime. I like yuri as much as the next guy, but I didn't think Uma Musume is a yuri-focused series as a whole and I didn't get into Uma Musume for yuri. Would I let it sour how I consume the franchise? No.

Unfortunately the internet is one big connected community now, so even if you have fans who like Uma Musume because the girls are for you and fans who like Uma Musume through shipping the girls with each other, they're bound to interact and there are some retards who like to screech at others for enjoying things in a different way. Like in that one twitter post where some retard was screeching about not drawing the girls with a male trainer/self-insert because "they're not for you!!! they're for each other!!!" and an english speaking artist drawing a trainer x uma fanart in response.
