Depends on the person and the gun available. If they had the Mauser in 30-06 and they were proficient with it it makes sense, for this shot.
But only if it wasn't done by a professional. A professional would use whichever equipment that would do the job and raise the least amount of suspicion. Which begs the question. Why didn't they use 5.56 or .223? typically those are the go to for no gun extremists.
