They didn't have the Hays code, but they still had censors. The Maltese Falcon came out in 1941 amd Lorre's performance did have to pass the censors. It is incredible that he was able to rub his obviously phallic cane and put it on his mouth like he did. The censors did object to scenes where he was apparenlty cuddling with Wilmer, the young gunsel.
