Well, the most prolific killers operated at a time when prostitutes and drug addicts weren't considered human so the police would never investigate their deaths and disappearances very hard. Ridgeway was able to just leave his dead bodies out in the open in the woods. And none of the girls he killed were even known to be missing until their bodies were found. Samuel Little, America's most prolific killer targeted fellow homeless women and he would just leave them on the streets. He wasn't arrested until a few years ago and was killing since the 70s.

But, all that to say the best method for leaving the least amount of evidence and mess to clean up would be binding the victim and using a ligature to strangle them. Bittaker used a cut wire hanfer he would wrap around the victim's necks then twist with a pair of pliers to tighten it. That way, even if them managed to free their hands they wouldn't be able to get the ligature off and would die regarldess. He was quite stupid though and dumped his third victom on a person's front lawn in Los Angeles. If he had kept to disposing of them in ravines in the Angeles National Forest then he could have gone on killing for awhile longer.
