i'll provide my own impression of the situation, or one aspect of it: it seems like the line between socialism and capitalism has multiple times been blurred with some success, a good example being the new deal era, which from what i can tell was pretty good for the working class, but bad for the capitalist class and therefore didn't last because ultimately control of the situation was concentrated in the hands of the capitalist class, and consequently in the 1980s there was a 'revolt of the elite'.

it seems to me like the countries capable of easily implementing socialistic policies are countries like the US but that the political landscape is so mired in public misinterpretations for example of the 'welfare state' as an encroaching socialist ideology that they would never support a tangible form of socialism.

if i were president my policy would be this: lie about it... i would give people socialism without letting them know it was socialism. what do you think about that?
