I think it's partly a consequence of the games being structured the way they are (do any level in any order like Megaman) that scene is the only instance we see Eden members acknowledging the deaths of the others. Plus I think they had the resolve to give their lives for the mission from the start (like true communists)

Eh, GV2 was already getting on the edges of being too edgy for the sort of game it was. At a certain point, your sad feelings start to overwhelm the fun jump and shoot man stuff. I think the route to take would have been to lighten up on the edge of the MC and other characters, but keep the overall world edgy as ever.
