Maybe your appearance (or part of it, at least) on that place is determined by your own self-reflection.
Maybe Jax used to be someone who dealt better with emotions and feelings, but, after losing some of the people he cared about, he started to distance himself from his old self, which lead to him forgetting parts of himself (represented by his tail, in this case).
After getting closer to Pomni, sharing a genuine adventure and heart-to-heart with her, he started to get closer to his old self, the self that cared, that felt, which made him recover a small part of himself.

I don't particularly like when it is done excessively, but I do hope that Japan doesn't stop doing them, it'll be an indicative that they're bowing down to the silly demands of the west.
