Agreed, I absolutely hate the stupid Larian thing of pushing those damn pre-made characters; They shouldn't even BE an option, you should ONLY be able to play as your own character.

Those pre-made characters should only be party members, not your own character. It's stupid, it's inconsistent, it is lame and it is lazy. for example:
>premade character is presented as being a depressed, gloomy mage with tragic backstory
>player picks him as man character
>decides to change him into a barbarian, and act all cheerful and shit

Where the hell is the consistency in that?

It's simple really.
>Characters are assigned a default AI based on their role (Healers will try to stay away from enemies and heal/buff allies, tanks will go to the frontline and aggro the enemies, mages will stay in the back and cast damage spells, etc)..
>The player can further customize aspects of the AI on the menu (for example, what to do in case an enemy engages in melee with them, if they should focus on ranged or melee actions, etc.)
>The player can also PAUSE the game at any time, if necessary, and issue commands while the game is paused
>The player can switch control to any other party member at any time.

So basically like it is in Baldur's Gate 2, or in the enhanced editions. I find it to be the best method even to this day.
