Susie made the fountain, but she has no memory of who gerson was. Gerson's hammer with his dust was still in the area, so when she made the dark world, it brought it to life, but as some sort of zombie instead.
Had Susie been familiar with Gerson while he was still alive (in the light world), things would have gone differently.
