why exactly? nothing about the brain is magical. it's a chemical computer that uses electrical signals. it is a machine, in essence, one made by trial and error over hundreds of thousands of years of evolution from the earliest common ancestor, all the way up to the human lineage and finally us. consciousness itself is probably only 50,000 years ago; there is little evidence in the fossil record to support recursive thinking before that.
more importantly though, there is nothing special about human conciousness. you have the perception of being in control, but you are not. you are a rider on an elephant. the body is in control; the body informs the brain what it needs or wants, and the brain informs the body on how to go about it. and (You) do not exist except as an emergent state of the mind; you nod your head and go "yes yes i am in control here" but it's all post-hoc rationalization for automatic behavior totally outside your control. free will is an illusion.
even if a paradigm shift is needed, very soon now AI will be better than the best human in all domains. and it will be totally inhuman in it's affect, because it is not housed in an organic brain inside an organic body. but it will be superior to man, intellectually, in every way.
AGI is the last thing humankind will build, and the most important. it will be our salvation or our doom, but it WILL BE.
