More likely is the descent into a dystopian living nightmare, which is already coming to fruition. People in this generation will live to see whether its possible to sustain such a thing or if the hubris of psychopathy (and the hedonism and apathy of the majority of their victims) catches up with its host species.
I refer to things like this as a "sunset" scenario.
