The name specifically is Yahweh, jews abbreviate it as YHWH. They do this because it's considered using His name in vain or out of respect of the divinity, which is funny because you're literally uttering it as you breathe.
Anyways, the story we all get told is Moses was given the name in Exodus from God through the burning bush, but that's a bit of paraphrasing. God explains to Moses that he appeared to Abraham, jacob, Isaac, etc but not using the term "yhwh". This is where He tells Moses "I am" and he goes to explain to the Israelites who 'I am" is and what He wants from them.
This is actually where the whole consciousness foundation LoA is based on comes from iirc, God explains "I am", and since we're His children, we're the only living things that can also explain "I am" and perceive our world and ourselves.
But that aside, the YHWH term comes from a lot of pre-recorded history. First recording is in like 1400 BCE in Egypt talking about YHWH in Edom, then Israelites took the title, combined aspects with Baal, then rewrote YHWH as the one and only.
There's probs better historians on here that could explain it but it's messy and I'm sure through time there's been smudges whether intentional or not.
