I think the bigger issue is that it prevents the gameplay from advancing more often than not, nevermind that it creates a clear separating of continuity. I mean, the gameplay distinguishes the medium. If you can't carry that, of all things, over to your direct sequel, why are you even making a direct sequel? Just make a new game you lazy homo.
God forbid a developer look at what they have and say "Yeah, I can improve that, AND add onto it as well." Instead of just pressing the reset button while clumsily copy-pasting the same assets, story, concepts, themes, etc...
Yeah man, nothing's funner than having a game TAKE AWAY elements of the gameplay just so they can reuse and/or add in new (and likely worse) ones. I love it when I order a cup of coffee, ask for a refill, and get hot water instead. What a non-issue.
