I've heard a lot of explanations for Scottie taking that unusually long-term deal but none of them really make any sense. The "I needed to secure the money now" part is just illogical because if he'd taken the normal deal literally everyone else was taking at the time he'd still be making millions and that was millions in 80's dollars so...a lot.
If he got hit by a bus five minutes after signing that contract and had to retire he'd still be richer than he ever imagined. And he had additional income from endorsements by then, too. He locked himself into a pennies on the dollar deal to mitigate a non-existent risk. There's no scenario where that's the smart move, which is why no one else was taking those sorts of deals.
