People who hold more empathy to animals than other people are often more psychotic then people who have no empathy towards animals. A lot of things can allow someone to rationalize or not care about animal cruelty, but it is a different thing entirely to do the inverse. It is always easier to render non-humanoid organisms as things but it takes a whole lot of psychological damage or miswiring for a guy to be able to render other people as "not human".
