While I prefer the older designs for pretty much everything, one aspect I like about the direction of this game is the concept of a little kid getting Alice in Wonderland'd to this bizarre world of monkey shit and forgotten RareWare characters. They're completely upfront about why they did it. It's because Rareware DK's face cannot emote. Only his mouth moves, the rest of his face is locked into a single expression forever. Check out the webm, this is an animator trying to make DK look excited. The 3D Mario team likes expressive characters and they didn't want to make a game about a character whose only expression is "pissed off". Nu-DK looks pretty close to the original in the few scenes where they make him look mad.

They treated him in their games as a cool, but mostly dimwitted character, so their uses of him always emphasized him giving off a very gorilla like empty headed stare. The devs after that never really got that aspect of the character, just like the loss of the tone and humor of the series that Rare gave it. It makes sense that everything afterwards felt off when it was devs with an entirely different internal culture and region of the world working with the characters. Hell, modern Rare devs probably would not be able to fully replicate the charm of the Rare era. I am glad the design stuck around for so long, but really they probably should have just completely rebooted the series from the ground up again in the 2000s and given him a new design back then based on whatever key dev team was going to handle the series.
