Topics include, but are not limited to: geckos, snakes of all kinds, frogs, salamanders, newts, turtles, tortoises, and much more. Before asking a question, do a search on the internet to see if it has been answered
Classifieds for finding breeders and products:
>morphmarket.com>kingsnake.com>faunaclassifieds.com>caudata.orgMost forums will have a "for sale" section on them, so look for that, especially if you have a specific herp you want. Craigslist can also be a good source for cheap aquariums, and make sure to check for any reptile expos that occur in your area.
When asking a question, make sure to include these details:

>owning one is like having an empty tank of dirt
Fuck this monkey paw ass bullshit
>>4995304Fucking graboids
Does anyone know a good source for Neon Day gecko info? Something like Dendroboard but for day geckos?
>>499542980 degree hotspot
60-80 humidity
eats mostly bugs with occasional sweet fruits
all day geckos are the same
>>4995538So basically the same care as dart frogs but with UVB and some gecko fruit mixes?
>>4995539nyes
but less wet
>>4995429and don't forget plenty of bamboo logs in the tank, they naturally occur in bamboo forests, so they're their preferred spots to move around on
>>4995567Would normal driftwood with lots of crevices not work? I'm not a fan of the bamboo look. Especially horizontal bamboo, pretty sure they don't even grow like that in the wild either
>Here's how to replicate their natural habitat
>eeehhhhh I dont like how it looks
Don't keep an animal
here's the last snake I caught, don't know what kind it is.
>>4995737I guess it's a western yellow belly racer, skull and coloration looks right. Handsome lad.
The lads are doing well
I think I have about 20
>>4995776they are so adorable
>>4995737he looks very offended
The $350 100 gallon arboreal arrived. The box looked like shit, the styrofoam inside is beat up but I didn't see any damage on the enclosure itself. I guess we'll see for sure when I assemble it later this month but it seems like it's paid off.
I have everything but the light and plants on hand now. Except the pothos. I have infinite pothos.
I think my 20 y/o female corn snake has gone blind in one eye. Shed properly last week, but the middle of one eye has gone white
It's now currently laying eggs, so it'll shed again in a couple weeks, so I'll have to wait to see what happens with the eye
>>4996076>We are rarelmao
sure
>>4995776A whole lot of them appear on my backyard when it rains
>>4996224there are some rare plants in there but most of them are just expensive and small enough to be pocketed.
Boas been doing well, wondering people's thoughts on what size feeders to give her. She's a little over a year. 175 grams. Been giving her a hopper every 2 weeks to 10 days. Current shape. Weighed her today
>>4996258What type of boa is that? if she's a ball python then that is kind of skinny
>>4996262She's an albino leopard boa
>>4996262Anon, boas and pythons are taxonomically defined. They're not interchangeable.
El Lagarto mysterio que no give fuck.
Waffles surgery seems to have been a success. The vet removed the entirety of the huge tumor on his thyroid, what a beast of an old man. Only real worry is now how his thyroid will function, but apparently parathyroid cells are still there in lizards and should take care of it. But for now, Think he's gonna make it :'). So grateful
>>4996731The waffle persists
Having an Ackie is cool and all but I do miss the chillness of my Blue Tounge...
There was no jumping out of the enclosure in a free fall, climbing up curtains or trying to escape constantly.
I could literally lave the enclosure door open for hours with Clara and she would just sit there chilling.
This psycho will see an inch worth of space and sky dive.
>>4996731Lucky, great news man.
Captive bred malagasy cat eyed snake. She's chill and will be 2 years old in august.
>>4997471Very pretty eyes, love that semi-squat face.
>Took my reticulated python for a walk and it ate one of the neighbors cats again
GODDAMNIT
>>4997662based invasive species remover.
Can I feed my bullfrog these or am I stuck with dubias?
I have an old 20 gallon high glass aquarium that I wanted to convert over to a terrarium. It has slight buckling, but it would be fine for dirt and some basic apparatus or branches. Is there anything other than Anoles or Leopard Geckos I could house in it?
I'm starting to get more and more redpilled on just keeping inverts and amphibians, I love snakes, lizards and turtrles but the total space it takes to keep one ball python can house like 6 medium sized toads or frogs.
>>4997774I wouldn't recommend it, those are literally designer roaches and like American roaches they're both able to climb and squeeze out of any space. They won't infest your home per says but you'll be seeing them everywhere.
>>4997998>but the total space it takes to keep one ball python can house like 6 medium sized toads or frogs.I mean sure but I don't really want 6 toads or frogs.
>>4997774Nah they breed too slow. Look into banana roaches, theyโre good feeders and bright green
>>4997998That's a good point actually. I didn't consider escape risk
>>4998246Will do
>>4998249>I didn't consider escape riskForget about infesting a house. That species would dry and die almost immediately. Keeping roaches contained is as easy as applying a slippery barrier around the lip of a tub
Never owned a snake before but these little niggas look neat and making me consider. Has any anon had experience with them before? Seems like the only catch is their size when fully grown
>>4998267~6 feet full grown is a very manageable size for a boa or python, especially considering they're not particularly girthy. You can throw them in a 5x2x2 comfortably, but bigger is obviously better.
>>4998321A 5x2x2 would be manageble in my current setup. Now I just need to answer whether I want to deal with the stigma of being "that guy who owns a snake" kek
tony

๐
hello fellow tegu owners, this is my boy tony named after tony sopranos, i have recently found him not to poop after coming out of hiatus and eating, his diet is 70% meat and 30% greens and pretty varied (pumpkin, capsicum, cucumber, spinach for greens organ meats usually chicken and lamb for meat stuff like barf for dogs but not expensive and in bulk, modest amount of fruit usually banana) he doesnt seem constipated or impacted and hasnt really shown any signs of being uncomfortable, hes eating, drinking, and likes to sleep in warm showers.
i felt around his cloaca and couldnt feel anything of note there either so kinda at a loss, do the fuckers eat their own poop or something?
>>4997774these are slow breeding and expensive, why the hell would you feed with these.
>>4998329Cost is not a barrier to me. Surely with enough of them the sheer size of a given replacement rate will compensate for the slow breeding process?
>>4998344i mean yea undoubtedly, but be wary they need rather humid enviroment, which coupled with their feed is likely to start smelling at a large scale, they also need a fair bit of heat depending on where you live.
>>4998418That's a fair point. I am no stranger to temperature control systems but moisture regulation is still a new one for me (and most cheap hygrometers have a minimum read of 50% from what I have seen). Smell is another thing I haven't considered, but could that be reduced with a proper bioactive setup with springtails and isopods?
>>4998267Note that Rainbow Boas are a high humidity snake less forgiving of husbandry mistakes than a regular old boa.
>>4998428moisture is honestly the hardest since you have to somewhat balance heat, mold and well just the humidity it self.
you could keep the smell down by doing it bioactive, might be hard to balance but they do come from more humid leaf litter heavy substrate so i dont see much issue desu, just remember to put some fish food and calcium supplements in the soil.
>>4998328Disclaimer, this advice comes from a guy who had a blue tongue with constipation.
You can try two things:
1.) vibrator on his abdomen for ~5-minute intervals daily, maybe a little longer if he's okay with it
2.) Raw egg, may result in diarrhea for a day.
how long should pinky/peach fuzzy sized mice be okay in the freezer?
>>4998763Home econ taught me 6-12 months for storing uncooked frozen meat. Probably use that as a guide and if it starts to smell you know they are going off and you need to clean it all out
>>4998598i read about the vibrator trick but i am not even sure hes constipated desu, i feed him chicklets who still have the egg in their stomach, but i am gonna load him up with some salmon oil and see what happens.
>>4998763>>4998809Because frozen whole rodents still have their gut microbes in them, they last significantly less time than butchered cuts of muscle. I try to buy rodents at least every 3 months and I still get a stinker every now and then.
Anybody know what sort of snake this is? He sounds like a rattlesnake, but he's just vibrating his tail against some leaves. Spotted in northern IL
>>4998886gopher snake. the tail rattling is a pretty common defensive move among pituophis species for exactly the reason you stated. big, and they tend to be drama queens, but harmless.
>>4998896Very cool - thanks a bunch anon. I sorta wish I could have kept him, but alas. An exciting find nonetheles
>>4998837you sure you actually freeze them down? if their frozen no activity should be able to take place making them theoretically stable forever, maybe your supplier is shit.
>>4999123Frozen food still spoils, just very slowly. If the freezing isnโt deep enough to kill the bacteria (like liquid nitrogen or some such), the bacteria are still minimally active. And small rodents have a high fecal bacteria load for their body weight.
This is why youโre not supposed to trust freezer meat if you donโt know whether or not the freezer has had constant power, and one of the reasons why even under constant power, frozen food can have a shelf life.
My zebra is very proud of herself.
Uro recovery update, sorry it's been a while!
I figured you all would want to know how he's been holding up! Happy to report, he is doing much, much better now and as you can see he's put on a lot more weight and looks (and behaves) energetic and healthy. He's been eating a varied diet and while he still hates to be touched, the little guy has at least seemed happy walking around, basking, and hanging out.
As always, tysm for letting me know how badly I was neglecting the little man. It makes me smile to see him doing better.
I'm relieved my idiocy seems to have not caused permanent harm. :)
>>4999216Genuinely starting to look healthy now. Keep it up.
>>4998886it's actually an eastern fox snake
>>4999172Hello zebra anon, how long does it take them to reach mtaurity? My male (originally though he was a girl until his head started turning black) is growing like crazy, only been 3 months since I've gotten him and he's doubled in size.
>>4996731>>4999216Lotta uros with health problems, lotta uros recovering completely from said problems, you love to see it.
>>4999347Mine was born January 2024, and I'd say she stopped growing for the most part at around the 1-year mark, similar pattern to blue tongues.
Baby picture.
>>4999413One more for an approximate size comparison. As per the filename, that baby picture was at about 3 months of age, with this at her adult size.
The notch in her ledge can be used as a scale reference.
I wanna get 3 Garder Snakes and name them Brad, Chad and Thad.
this is stuck shed right? Any tips on how to deal with it? I've never had to deal with it on a snake. Should I buy that reptished stuff or just let him soak in warm water for a while?
>>4999882honestly can't confirm stuck shed since the area in question is too blurry, but the shedease stuff is just water and some emollients, dont bother unless a regular soak takes care of it. should just roll off after a 10 minutes soak and lightly running the tail through your fingers. If nothing happens, something else is going on, may be vet time in that case.
>>5000053he wouldn't sit still so the camera wouldn't focus. I'm fairly certain its stuck shed though, it wasn't like that until he shed a few weeks ago and its dull compared to the rest of his body.
>>5000187When he shed a few weeks ago was it complete, or was it missing a chunk? snakes shed all in one go, so you should have pretty exact information as to whether something is stuck on his ass or not.
if it WAS a complete shed (eyecaps, complete tail) then that's not stuck shed, and might be the start of a skin infection.
My crested gecko is a rare genetic morph, white lilly. In hindsight, I don't think I would have gotten him, had I known the breeding standards for the morph itself. In short, there is anecdotal evidence suggesting a higher mortality rate amongst juveniles. Breeding two lilly whites is highly unstable.
That said, I still think he's pretty and has been a good, healthy geck. Though, some tricolors will still achieve a similar pattern.
Guys I thought my snake was done for
The air conditioning stopped working and combined with the sun coming through the window, the heat lamp, and no AC in the house the coolest spot in the tank when I got home was 109
It was an emergency situation, but he's OK now
Anyway whats a good price for a 40 gallon breeder? I want to upgrade the habitat to atone for my sins
Got 3 garters behind my firewood storage right now, this is the big one checking me out.
Theres a cute girl in my class who has a snake
How do I appeal to you nutters
>>5000633Strike up a conversation with her as you casually toss back some pinky mice and swallow them whole.
>>5000633Ask her about her hobby, retard
>>5000597You can get glass aquariums for pretty cheap but I recommend getting a front opening pvc or glass tank instead.
I have one of these https://dubiaroaches.com/products/36x18x18-pvc-panel-reptile-enclosure and it works well enough and looks good.
>Snake being tied to a hose and blown up like a balloon with water
>Snake being cracked like a whip by some red neck
>Rats being slowy torn limb by limb by a pack of dogs
>Fish being cooked alive or tortured
>Bug wars
>Rats fighting Small ass ball pythons to the death
But none of it is considered animal abuse by Instagram, Facebook or YouTube.
Gods going to bring justice to the wicked one day and my God will it be glorious. That's the only way I can cope with it at this point.
>>5000633I'm not weird or anything the reason I have a snake is because I'm mentally retarded so it's something I can handle due to their low maintainable and infrequent feeding schedule
Unlike a dog or bird that needs daily care it's ok if I make a mistake and forget sometimes
>>5000684That shit makes me want to do horrific and unspeakable things. Like if some redneck did that shit to a snake or lizard or anything in front of me, I'd take extreme pleasure in torturing and brutalizing them in ways that would make Satan's stomach churn.
I'd open American Psycho and start trying stuff from that book on them.
People who abuse animals need to be treated like the bodies in People Playground.
>>5000776not beating the stereotypes, snake people
>>5000777(((people))) who abuse animals for fun literally are not human and anything done to them nets nothing on one's moral compass. I could skin them alive, roll them in salt, and throw them into a brazier, and it would be no more an evil act than walking down the street and buying a Turkey Bacon Ranch from my local Firehouse Subs.
>>5000777Check em'
>>5000779People who hold more empathy to animals than other people are often more psychotic then people who have no empathy towards animals. A lot of things can allow someone to rationalize or not care about animal cruelty, but it is a different thing entirely to do the inverse. It is always easier to render non-humanoid organisms as things but it takes a whole lot of psychological damage or miswiring for a guy to be able to render other people as "not human". I shouldn't be surprised though with you using the (((ripples))), you fit the profile.
>>5000792There is no difference in the value of a human and a animal. I hold you life value no more then I do an ant on the sidewalk.
Any kind of "positive contribution" that humans make are instantly disqualified by the evil they spread.
No other animal systemically abuses and tortures billions of living beings every year for the sake of pleasure.
>>5000800>There is no difference in the value of a human and a animal>Any kind of "positive contribution" that humans make are instantly disqualified by the evil they spreadThank you for proving my point as well as showing the length of your mental retardation (or at least I hope it is retardation)
>>5000796They shit like rockets burn fuel.
My enclosure for my leachie has a small gap in between the door and the door frame. He'll shit while clinging to the door, leading to all kinds of leachie shit leakage.
Also, they'll never want to hang out with you - ever.
>>5000858Sounds like a pretty "shitty" pet :(
>>5000859Nah, I love him, he's great.
>>5000880So besides the machine gun level shitting and not liking to be handled would you say they are rewarding to look after?
>it's okay to abuse an animal because they have less than value than a person
What board are you on bro?
It wasn't an ethical argument. The point was that a person who can render down other people into non-entities while being protective of animals is not only psychotic, but more psychotic than the inverse which is already pretty questionable as it is. It wasn't about supporting one thing over another, it was about contrasting to terrible mindsets and illustrating how deranged
>>5000776 >>5000779 is. It is easier to kill a non-human than an actual human in the vast majority of the population. People who find it easy to kill an another human often find animals even easier to kill. But individuals who find it easier to kill humans while being empathetic to animals is very much a minority of a minority and often goes hand in hand with profound mental illness
>>5000881He croaks every night, just a little, as I'm going to bed. He's energetic starting between 6 and 7 pm, and watching him grow slowly, over time, developing his colors all the while was thoroughly engaging.
He's a difficult beast, but comparing that to something like a crested, it's all the more interesting.
There are benefits to going for something easy like a leopard gecko, but some might find those traits mundane or boring. Me, I just like all of it.
To answer your question, I'm just a bad person to ask, because I find all kinds of lizards rewarding in their own way. The more I keep, the more redeeming qualities I find in each one, as I come to further appreciate their differences.
>>5000885It's not okay to abuse a person over a mindless reptile.
Just give them a slap on the wrist and ban them from owning pets since they're too stupid to set a civilized example and are stuck in the "kitten playing with its food" phase of mental development.
>>5000887Humans are apex predators and require meat to survive. Some amount of casual animal-killing is normal, natural, and ideal. Killing animals in general has zero correlation with any bad behavior. Rather, people who have a hard time killing animals are unusually sheepish, submissive, dependent, and helpless if they are not actually just a narcissistic psychopath who thinks their only real friend is their cat.
It's only killing very specific animals and in specific ways that indicates a problem, because empathy is not a conscious choice you can make. It is an animal instinct hardwired into your brain, and some animals trigger it in normal people, and most animals don't.
>>5000887Thanks for the diagnosis, doc. Now fuck off or post herps.
>>5000897Sure thing psycho faggot
>narcissistic psychopath man: i will slaughter you if you harm a single living thing and the world will remember me as a soldier for the true good, they god they fear, i am the hero of nature. i am superior to others. i alone decide what is the worth of a man. that which acts without my knowledge acts without my consent and must justify its behavior to my towering intellect in supremely self-consistent ethical terms. i have become a god, i have become the god. i am the arbiter of good. i will fuck you up. you are not a person to me. i will slaughter you. i lust for blood. you are no different from a worm. you are evil to me. you abuse living things. life is good, or it is not, and in striving to be the most rational, good, admirable, popular, and superior man on earth i have decided that life is good, and you must not be alive.
>smartest reptile: shut the fuck up and stop shouting next to my glass box
>>5000792>People who hold more empathy to animals than other people are often more psychotic then people who have no empathy towards animals. No, sheltered faggots who have not had to deal with the true face of humanity place human empathy above others because of their ignorance and naivety.
People who have dealt abundantly with people and animals will invariably understand that animals will never commit the evils and horrors that mankind finds so much fun.
I can be kind and understanding to a human their entire life, and they are still liable to betray and destroy me for profit. An animal who has come to trust a human will continue to trust that human forever, and unless something is psychologically wrong with the animal or it is damaged, it will never betray them.
Furthermore, if any (((human))) finds it fun to abuse and torture creatures who not only did nothing to you, but cannot even conceptualize cruelty as an idea and therefore will suffer and die with no understanding as to why you are hurting them, any human who finds THAT to be "fun" is not worthy of empathy and if you would stand to defend them you can share their fucking grave.
>>5000801"EERR DURR, HOOMAN LOOK LEIK ME SO HOOMAN LIFE IMPORPANTZ"
Fucking kill yourself you retarded nigger.
>>5000800Correct.
>>5000885>individuals who find it easier to kill humans while being empathetic to animals is very much a minority of a minority and often goes hand in hand with profound mental illnessThen I am proud to wear the mantle of psychopath if it means I oppose faggots like you who believe that the fact your face looks similar to mine more than say, a rat's, means we're somehow friends on some level that ascends animal/human companionship.
I don't fucking know you from Adam, we're not friends, you have no reason to stand by me any more than I do you. If you hurt the creatures I protect and love, be they person or animal, I will cause you untold suffering and feel nothing but satisfaction in the act.
>>5000899tbf my lizard IS subject to listening to the muffled sounds of me ardently advocating for fascism on random Discord servers at 4 in the morning.
He doesn't seem all that bothered by it tho, bro is chill
>>5000934thats a lot of self important ranting to say youโre a mentally defective manchild and only like things that cant hurt or criticise you narcissist-kun
>>5000899 didnt just have you pinned down he made you sound much less pathetic than you actually are. maybe you should let other people speak for you, because a joking caricature of yourself is more palatable than the slimy weirdo you actually are.
>>5000938If you cant hear your lizard asking you to shut up and stop shouting by his glass box, youโre not listening.
>>5000934Just admit your weak at this point. If you are that easily broken by a lifes worth of human interaction that you have to retreat to animals to have some level of control over potentially undesirable outcomes or interactions you should just follow the man's example in your pic. Your amateur takes on misanthropy are embarrassiny pathetic.
You're the sheltered fag here.
>>5000938To be fair, it takes a reptile about a week to finish thinking "i wish this fag would shut up" and only as long as no one interrupts their contemplations.
>>5000942>Bla bla bla humanist cope cope copeClassify me however you want retard. Smile and shake hands with your fellow man while his buddy slides the knife in your back, but hey, at least you never judged a book by its cover!
>>5000944>You're the sheltered fag here. No, I don't attach my ego to the human race and get emotionally upset when someone points out how gay and retarded we all are, unlike (You).
>>5000950You are such a pathetic, fearful, and inept creature. A young chicken has more zeal for life and thirst for challenge than you, a shriveled, cringing failure who larps as an edgelord online.

>>4999144thats just not true and for safety its ALWAYS GOOD its only in regards to quality. NO bacteria can be active at -5 and fecal bacteria load is bullshit jargon you just made up, its not "fecal bacteria" its the enzymes in the stomach that has the biggest impact in breakdown. fecal bacteria inherently has no real ill effect when ingested.
Obviously if you dont know if the freezer goes out its gonna be bad because then it has gone periods without being frozen, are you some kinda negro retard? fuck kinda point is that?
>>5000952>You are such a pathetic, fearful, and inept creature.Damn bro, ever rent that projector out? Its a biggun.
>>5000950>>5000952He's just baiting like a faggot, don't respond and he'll fuck off back to his monkey torture discord.
So my kingsnake won't stop biting me. I've tried washing my hands, washing my hands then putting on Germ X (he just finds a spot not covered) and even Listerine doesn't seem to bother him. Was cute at first but now that he's big when he does it it ends with me bleeding. At this point I'm about ready to hand him off to someone better equipped to work with him. I wanted something I could actually interact with, not put a digit out of commission when I do
>>5001015King snakes are just like that. They'll swallow their own tail if they see it.
>>5001017He did bite himself at least twice trying to get my hand
>>5001015Start target training. you need to disassociate your hand with food.
You also, funnily enough, need to start handling him MORE, even if it's just opening up his enclosure and hanging around the front of it for ten minutes handling decor. he needs to have youa round and smell you more often when he's not in food mode. Maybe even stick some cork bark in a sweaty shirt of yours for a few days and place that in the enclosure, make your smell a part of his everyday background.
>>5001030I did do it a few years back though that basically ending with him lashing out at anything blue. As for opening his cage, the response to that is to try and launch himself out the opening. I only got so many fingers to get bitten and bloodied
>buy snek
>get upset when it bite
>>5001015>>5001046My only advice is to learn the signs better, to avoid getting bit. It is a front-opening enclosure, right?
>>5001046seems like you may need to get a more specific target. blue and white checker pattern or something.

Just got bite by my King Rat for the first time since I got him NOV 2023.
He was at the glass like a psycho zooming back and forward so I put my finger up to it and he was watching it super closley.
I kinda figured he might bite me if I put my hand in there so I opened it up and used by snake hook to grab him which I've never done before and when I went to pick up his front half the fucker spun around and gave me a quick snip on the middle finger.
I tried to see if I could pull him out again a few minutes later to see if he had calmed down but he spun around on me and the way he looked at my hand made me give up and put him back.
I have a rat thawing out for him for tomorrow but fuck I'm kinda of spooked now.
He's maybe 38 inches right now and one day having a 8 foot demon isn't something I'm excited for. Hopefully it's just a bad day for him since he's hungry. He's never acted like this before.
>>5001376Good luck anon. Especially since we are the ones who told you to get it
>>5001300I love these guys like you wouldn't believe
any advice how to catch a large rat snake in my backyard?
ive been told to wrangle it because its eating baby wild rabbits
Good news, everyone. My salamander is still alive and kicking after I came back from my 17-day family road trip. Judging from how empty the tank is, he probably figured out that the cherry shrimp in his tank are edible.
There's quite a bit of evidence the little guy hunted down his tankmates: some uprooted plants, changes in the sand substrate surface, and poop clusters with bits of shrimp exoskeleton like legs sticking out of them. That and I went from having like 15-20 shrimp before I left down to 5. Maybe even 4, seeing as how I can barely find any.
I'm not upset- rather, pleasantly surprised he can adapt and hold out this long without supervision. I'm just glad he's still here (and apparently not even the slightest bit skinnier, the fat little faggot).

>>5001392Thanks man, he's my first snake so Im sorta happy he did bite me. It means I know how to read them because I assumed he would. I guess I didn't think he actually would since he never has.
I'm interested in getting a pet reptile. Maybe a snake or a lizard and want to know if they're capable of self-regulating their exposure to UVB. Do they know when they've had enough UVB to avoid it and prevent sunburns?
>>5001527With most reptiles or snakes you can just put the UVB on a day/night cycle and adjust the height of the bulb to the reptiles specific needs (which shouldn't be too specific as long as you have an appropiete enclosure, but albinos often need their UV source higher up than standard varieties). It's the same with a lot of terrestial amphibians. The thing you should be really carefull of is heat lamps because some reptiles will sunbathe until they dehydrate or burn themselves
I fucking hate crickets, they're expensive, they stink, they die, they jump yet their all half my animals will eat.
I tried to feed my Ackie some nice juicy dubias and he looked at me like I was a faggot.
>>5001527as far as I'm aware they have a biochemical mechanism that prevents them from making excess D3.
You wont have to worry about sunburn, even the best indoor lighting is a pale comparison to the sun, and that's really not that big an issue unless you get an albino version of an animal that requires a shitload of UV or otherwise spends a lot of time basking, like iguanas.
My snake shedded and I found it right away, the skin was still floppy and wet and kinda stinky haha
I never smelled anything quite like it before, hard to describe haha
>>5001718hahas aside you're right, the only way I can really describe it is vaguely organic. like you can tell this is the product of a living creature. the same oddly light twinge that fish and frog meat both have.

Pun not intended but appreciated
>>5001540>>5001667Thanks anons. Yeah, I'm not interested in albinos or special morphs, I think the former definitely has a poorer quality of life in general.
>>5001223SkyterraUV, big recommendation.
>>5001664>I tried to feed my Ackie some nice juicy dubias and he looked at me like I was a faggot.Did you cycle different feeders for him at a young age? That often eliminates picky food behavior
>>5001902I got him as an adult and I managed to get him to eat the dubias after all. I just had to wait a few hours and teast him with cricket scented tongs.
My dumerils refuses to eat. Itโs been 4 months and once a week I offer him something. Iโve tried mice, rats, quail sausages. In the enclosure, outside the enclosure, made a specific feeding enclosure for him, etc. When should I get worried about him staving himself? I havenโt tried live prey yet but heโs tiny and Iโm afraid that the pray would eat him instead.
Heโs not underweight afaik. Enclosure is set up according to reptifacts and is the correct temperatures and shit but the little bastard wonโt eeeeaaaaaat.

>>5002505literally exactly the same as mine. Thanks.
>>5001947If he's out of his major growth phase I just chock it up to hunger strike/moodiness bullshit. my corn (and carpet) have both gone on hunger strikes. the fucking corn is almost every year for several months at this point.
Is the food item warm when you're trying to feed him? do you use tongs to dangle/jangle for a bit? have you given increasingly long periods of time between trying to feed him? are you trying to feed him when he's actively moving and looking around vs when he's asleep (basically try to time it when he'd look like he's actually hungry/interested)
>>5002546With just about every kind of reptile, in general, it's always fine until it's not. Leopard geckos are territorial, they are in no way social, the lizard benefits not at all for the entertainment of the keeper. At best, in a tank of 3 leos, you'll have one OK leo and two really stressed leos.
Remember there used to be a STP owner here a while back, is he still around? Kinda interested in getting one of those fat fucks
>>5002935That's not true.
They're colony animals.
It's more than possible that they're all happy.
>>5002935I have known people with 8 of the fuckers in one giant enclosure and they did fine. Issues only arrise if you have a lot of males competing for breeding rights which can cause infighting.
Something I wonder about often is how come Youtubers back in the day like early 2010s were like instant millionaires a lot of the time. Pewdiepie, Markiplier, Leafy, Idubbbz, H3H3 and so on within like a year of becoming popular were millionaires and it seems like that doesn't happen anymore. Like most 1 - 2 million youtubers are making probably low 6 figures a year but I don't think they're buying mansions rich.
But then there's these animal channels people like DARKDEN, WWR, Snake Discovery (Pre Store) and so on who are making two videos a week and life off of that and their patreon.
It boggles my mind how that works. It must be Sponsorships' right I know they fork over like 5 grand a deal and if you're someone with a larger platform is can be as high as like 15 grand.
>>5003032It's sponsorships.
The reptile pet and breeding industry make a shit ton of money and can afford to pay well with sponsorships due to the markups they do with reptiles and amphibians. For instance if two tree frogs mate they can produce a dozen hundred froglets. Then the breeder or company who own the froglets approach their store contacts and offers them as stock which the store can buy and sell on for anywhere between 60-100 in markup. If you have 300 froglets and enough out reach to customers you are looking at around 18,000 or 30,000 in sales alone from just those two white tree frogs mating. Now imagine ramping up that scale with other reptiles and the additional markups that come with morphs, fancy varieties or exotic specimens. It's a crazy industry.
>>5003039And just to clarify, I know frogs are not reptiles. I am just using them as an example for the breeding industry which they share with reptiles
My King Rat is so fucking active now it's crazy. I literally see him out and coiled up in an S pose constantly during the day or if not I'll see him curled up under the heat lamp.
He's about 3 and a half foot in a 36x18x12 so he should be good for a bit longer before an upgrade. (He's slim and lean not thick like a BP)
Anyways It just such a wild flip, before he would hide all day and if I did see him he would run into one of his 5 hides and not come out again until night time.
Now he will S pose and just stare me down as I walk by his enclosure.
Still no Musking or shit flinging thankfully. Though now I have to use the snake hook since if I just stick my hand in their like I used to he's for sure gonna bite me.

Anyone have experience with a Russian Sand Boa? I've wanted a Kenyan one for awhile but I've been turned off because of they spend so much time burrowed. I've heard that the Russian Sand Boas spend much more time on the surface exploring. Is this true?
>>5003532They seem to be a pretty rare species in captivity. You'll probably have more luck searching social media sites for keepers and PMing them.
>>5003535I've already started spam requesting every facebook group I can find and I found a handful of pretty consistent breeders that sell for minimum 500.
>>5002968Leos are absolutely in no way colony animals, what the fuck. Did you confuse herp for a thread about arthropods?
>>5003579You're uneducated. They live in loose colonies naturally.

as with any other animals living in the same space, you need to watch for fights/bullying and make sure they're all eating properly.
>>5003608You can't equate wildlife scenarios to captivity. Your 40-gallon breeder is in no way comparable to the hundred-acre area in which any single leopard gecko frequents.
Furthermore, there's a distinct difference between a mammalian concept of sociability and a reptile equivalent. A group of leopard geckos occupying the same space in some craggy rock for cover during the day is not a "colony" as
>>5002968 would put it. Those same leopard geckos are going to go their own separate ways once dusk breaks. Further, they'll actually have the option to go more than 3 feet away from eachother, unlike most captive setups.
Unless you're breeding, there is objectively no reason to cohab this species beyond some egotistical desire to appear more advanced as a keeper, or because your brain doesn't see beyond some elementary reasoning like "more = better" or some such.
It is not replicating natural conditions and it is not fool-proof. You will not have 24/7 monitoring on the habitat. I can't imagine wanting to put my animals in a scenario where I run the risk of permanent injury purely for my own amusement, I genuinely can't.
>>5003610And dogs live in packs and eat raw meat everyday but they're perfectly happy. This is a non-issue. It depends on the personality and other factors. You buy 2 dogs and they can kill each other without 24/7 monitoring. Should no one have dogs together then?
>>5003669Dogs can get lonely, will play together and build lasting bonds. Shit comparison

Are people retarded or am I just lucky?
I go on facebook and see these people make these giant fancy set ups and then go "muh frog won't eat anything he keeps hiding"
Meanwhile I got my frogs in the mail and keep them in a literal tupperware and they ate literally five minutes after in their new home. They even already laid eggs for me three times but I killed the tadpoles by accident the first two times
Are they just overcomplicating herps?
>>5004343Frogs are garbage cans so those owners almost certainly fucked up somewhere.
>>4995272 (OP)>>4995272 (OP)My ball python hasnโt pooped or eaten in 3 weeks. Sheโs looking healthy. Approx 5 years old now. I upgraded her rat size to medium rats on her last meal, she ate it no problem. Last 2 weeks Iโve offered smaller sizes. Small rats and she didnโt take them. Itโs hard to tell because itโs nothing super pronounced but she looks like sheโs got a turd in the chamber, very slight sausage butt. It doesnโt look constipated just like she has a turd in there.
Her last 3 feedings (the ones sheโs eaten) she didnโt strike and I had to leave her in a feeding box with the rats, but when I checked back 20 minutes later she was eating them. These last 3 attempts she has zero interest in the rats even after 40 minutes.
Husbandry is tight, canโt find any reason she would reject food and stop pooping. Iโm considering upping her humidity for a week to see if that does anything but it already sits in the 60s.
Iโm concerned because obviously it warrants some concern seeing any animal not eat or poop for almost a month, but I do understand snakes can go off food randomly for a while and take a bit to poop.
What do I need to watch out for what signs? She just seems curious when I handle her like always, active, alert. Sheโs a brave snake no head shyness or anything Iโve handled her since she was a yearling. Sheโs only ever skipped food for up to 2 weeks in the past around sheds but since her last meal 3 weeks ago she has shed and still isnโt interested in food.
>>5004622Just donโt feed her for a while. My carpet went 2 months without a shit once. Gently check if the area around her cloaca is really firm, if itโs too hard then that would be something to be aware of
>>5004622>>5004911I think I heard in one of her videos that Lori Torrini only feeds her ball pythons when they're actively showing hunting behavior (i.e. "when they're hungry") and that can vary between every few weeks and months at a time.
>>5004343>Are they just overcomplicating herps?Yes. They assume Frogs are show animals and will use their enviroment so they get a terrestial one and act shocked when the terrestial does terrestial things like burrowing. That is what my african bullfrog does. I set up hides and a minicave but 7/10 times he will be buried in a random spot in the substrate instead. Some bark and large carpet moss to make them feel like they have cover from predators on the surface is more than enough despite it not looking the prettiest. People also make their enclosures too as terrestial frogs seldom move about if they have a heat/cool balance and a water source. Pond setups are just as stupid as there are guys who will make a 6ft long half embankment recreations because "it's their natural habitat" and "they love the water". The problem with that is their natural habitat has even larger bodies of water and their is already an ecosyetem with natural water replenishment in place. So these guys will give their frog a large body of water and then it will start to get illnesses or even flat out die as they absorb stuff developing in the warm, relatively small body of water that these guys think is huge. A large tray deep enough for their body with dechlorinated water is more than enough as they only want to soak. Change the water in 1-2 day rotation and you are keeping your terrestial healthy. Arboreal frogs are a different beast and will climb around or use suspended hides, but some people don't want that and instead want some really cool swamp setup that has their toad or bullfrog sitting on a rock or moss proudly for everyone to see. All of it makes me understand some of the setups you see with pacmans which is like a box with dirt in it that they often do in asia, it is truer to their function. Although I would argue that they still need a vivarium for heat/cool regulation as well as providing them the oppertunity to emerge and roam or soak on the odd occasion.
>>5005040>People also make their enclosures too big*
>>5005040Here's my fire belly toad enclosure

>>5001947How do you feed him. I used to own a dumerils and he would only eat when I offered him rats when he was fully submerged in the substrate.
>>5001947>heโs tiny and Iโm afraid that the pray would eat him instead.I hate how these fucking reptile "experts" got people thinking their snakes are helpless little retards that will get killed by anything that moves. Snakes are well adapted to overpowering and killing their prey. If they weren't they would be dead. Just because your snake is in captivity it doesn't mean he forgot how to hunt. I have a ball python that will only eat live rats and she's been just fine the 3 years I've had her despite every retard on the internet insisting that a rat would absolutely kill my snake. Only one rat fought back and bit her but she still killed him and ate him and she recovered just fine. Feed your damn snake anon, he'll be fine.
>>5006697Making a shitload of assumptions here. first being that live prey is the answer but he's reluctant to try it, when in this case it's just something he hasn't tried. It's entirely possible it IS the answer, but it's also possible it wont be, or could be something else he hasn't tried. Or shit maybe the snake just isnt hungry.
Also, "I've done X for Y years and it's been fine" is a dogshit data point for really anything. No one has a problem doing whatever until they do, and the strawman of "the rodent is GOING TO kill your snake" isn't doing you any favors either. The rodent fighting back IS a risk, serious injuries can and do happen, and the fact that your snake happened to come away with only minor injuries when it did in fact attack doesn't change that.
I think a lot of people would prefer the amount of times their animal risks getting injured trying to eat to be as close to zero as possible.
>>5005040>>5005572>>5004343The DIY youtuber guy who's name I can't remember right now has a really cool enclosure he's done for his Pixie Frog but since he does shit DIY it seems like theirs always a leak or something.
Anyways unless you're willing to put in the time and money to do something crazy like pic related the right way with all the money that comes with it or the time then just do something basic like a tub of dirt with a sandwich container water dish and a chunk of cork bark.
>>5006584Does it still have that rainbow sheen?
>>5006778Yeah I have seen that guy's work. It looks cool and there is a lot of planning that goes into them, but he is doing himself and the frog no favors by again having such a large water source like that. What ever develops in it, especially with a tropical heat soruce, the pixie will absorb it through it's skin. Microbes, bacteria, mold ect ect. These setups need a water source that can be changed daily and scrubbed intently to avoid the such risks. After all Pixies will often poo and urinate in the water. But, if someone can take the time to change and clean the area of the water source at least every two days it should be fine realistically. If I could afford the water bill and the time I would try something similar.
>>5006805Yep still looks like it was dunked in gasoline. If you plan on getting one make sure its humidity is around 80% with plenty of ventilation. This is one of the few species I recommend keeping in plastic tubs just for how easy it is to keep humidity levels high
>>5006916Honestly it's the only real snake I would want to get. I have done alright with my frog setup which is high flow high humid so caring for one wouldn't be toooo difficult I think. But I am always concious of tank space and I already want to get some leopard geckos and maybe some white's tree frogs which will take up the rest of my setups room footprint.

>>5008823>PathogensWas never a consideration

1. I don't think there's anywhere around where I live where I can easily find frogs and toads
2. More importantly, I want a specific kind of frog so this wouldn't work
>>5008806Find a local reptile store and see if they do frogs then explain the situation you have and they might be able to take your frog in if you need to move. It depends on the store, but independent outlets where the owner themselves have pets I find to be quite understanding and involved in rehome networks. Especially if you get a terrestial which is fairly low maintence
>>5008961That's been my thinking, so I thank you for the advice. If the store doesn't take it, though, I'm not sure what else to do
>>5008963I will be brutally honest with you here, if you're unsure about whether you can keep it you're probably better off waiting until you know if you will be moving or not. It's a lame solution I know, but you will be already paying a lot of money for the luxury of only having a frog for a year
>>5008967I sincerely apologize for not being more clear about the conundrum. I will be moving and I can't take the frog, it's just a matter of when it'll happen. I have 1 year at least, but beyond that I don't know. That's the issue. I appreciate the input, however

>>5010276Damn that really sucks. I can't really think of many places where importation wouldn't be possible, but honestly it wouldn't fair for you or the frog. Even without moralfagging it's dead money if you know you can't keep it and you will spend a decent amount of money to get a frog in a good setup to begin with. Ontop of all of that you will likely get a young frog which by the time it is fully grown and you are able to appreciate it you will likely need to move. I know it's not the most desireble advice anon, trust me. I have been in that same spot for years regarding dogs. But when you get that frog and grow an attachment and are standing there and looking at his tank, knowing you need to get rid of him, you are going to wish you didn't get him so you don't have to go through that emotional turmoil.
My animals are "tong tamed" in the fact that they understand Tong = Food, however they also think Tong IS food and will ignored the roach or whatever is on the tong to try and eat the tong instead.
This is like a constant for all of them fucking retards.
>>5010907That sounds about right. You need to keep in mind most herps don't have perfect eye sight and have blind spots under their heads. Some like frogs also catch prey by being stationary to blend in before striking at their food. But most of all the fact they are able to associate tongs with food is quite indicative of intelligence. You will likely find they will do the same with colours as well

Here's an update pic of my plump and pretty happy lil man I just took. Picking leftover red lentils out of his food dish after I fed him this morning. Thought you guys might appreciate seeing him again :)
My 5 year old leopard gecko was diagnosed with fatty liver disease at the vet. He was underweight. It's been 10 days since, and he has put on weight and seems to be doing better. Active, eating fine, moving fine. I soak him daily for ~15 minutes per the vet's recommendation.
I asked him about the prognosis for it and he gave a vague 'Well it all depends for these little guys" answer. It's my understanding that it can't be fixed, or that it's very hard to reverse.
What can I actually expect here?
Normal shedding or is my turtle infected with a fungus or bacteria? Seen him with stringy filmy stuff before when hes shedding but this bit on his right foot hasnt gone away in a week or two and two of his toes look a bit swollen. Had him for 7 years at this point, hes always been healthy, still acting normally and swimming and when I touch his claws they feel fine compared to the other one (I only see this on the right one not the left one). Gonna do a 1/4 water change but wondering what you anons think

Where to get one between the ages of approximately 25-50 and in good health?
I kind of wanna snek but not sure which.
My space is fairly small (33m2) so I cant have a big one.

King Rat update, He's been more defensive for sure but hasn't strike or bit me since last time. But he does S pose and stop flicking his tongue when I do anything inside of his enclosure. When I'm outside of it however he's super shy and likes to hid and if I pull him out he lets me handle him. Though he might growl is he get's angry but he does it rarely.
He's switched to Nocturnal as well, apparently in their natural habitat they will switch to nocturnal during summer and diurnal during winter so I'm doing something right at the very least for him to be displaying such behavior.
Last night he rattled his tail at me and It was pretty loud.
I fed him just now and he didn't like me watching him so he curled up into a ball moved to a hide so I couldn't watch him eat. I'm jealous of guys who have snakes especially King Cobras who will sit next to you and chomp down on food or even let you hand feed them.
Here he was checking out my fingers to see if he could eat them while he had a mouthful of dirt already.

How do you guys thaw your rabbits? I took one from the freezer for my boa constrictor yesterday and let it sit inside a plastic bag in a bowl of water for about 20 hours now, but now I wonder if I took too long.
>>5013383I dont have to use prey items that large but I have experience in food service so I just tend to use those guidelines - submerge in cold water (eater conducts heat better than air), stick in the fridge until no longer frozen, heat up to appropriate temp (preferrably with cold water thats been warmed, hot water from the tap has the potential to leech toxic metals) just before serving.

>>4995272 (OP)could we breed dinosaur sized snakes if there was enough CO2 in the atmosphere? or does nature not allow this? could a big snake the size of a dinosaur still crawl, or would it have to roll on its side like a noodle?
>be on good terms with the local reptile store
>visit yesterday and the owner says they been needing to see me
>they explain they bought a giant gecko a month or so ago from an encounter company due to them being unable to keep up with it's temperment
>the gecko is 4 years old and she suspects they were just too nervous handling it and it has been socialble temperment wise
>she was told it was female and so she put it in with a male to hopefully start a breeding pair
>after a month she finds out it was actually a low tes male and because of it being in proximity with another male the tes levels have increased to make the sexing more obvious
>she already has another female she can cohab with the male but she does not have space for this one
>she asks if I want him at first refusal and at around $450 because she knew I have been thinking about a gecko for a while
>leave the store agreeing to a monthly settlement to buy him and to have him by the weekend
What am I in for? Apparently he is a smaller sub species and has pinkish beige stripes. I have handled him and seems nice enough, but this will be the first time I have ever looked after a gecko

>>5013887that's a lot of text i didn't read, but sounds like a scam
>>5012095He looks just fine...
>>5013944>but sounds like a scamhow so?
>>5013867It depends on what you mean by dinosaur sized, there are already snakes bigger than the average dinosaur. But generally you will not be able to make a creature larger than an elephant without archosaur respiration.
>>5014172>It depends on what you mean by dinosaur sized,so at least T-rex size i'd say, so a 8,000 kg snake, is it possible?
>>5013935Cute little guys.
Which bulbs do you use for snake basking light? Do you buy these overpriced memes that promise a pocket sun or just go for basic incandescent (burgers need no apply, they were cucked out of such lamps)
I am an official hobbyist chameleon breeder.
A clutch of 2 eggs finally survived and are likely to survive. I have a reptile shop guy that has experience with them and wants to buy them for his personal collection.
Brookesia stumpffi btw please clap.
>>5014620Dang that's cool, always awesome to see people captive breed rarer species. How is care compared to their more popular and larger cousins? I love chameleons but their fragility has always turned me off from owning one, but I heard anecdotally that pygmy/leaf chameleons are actually a lot less demanding than your typical veiled or panther.
>>5014640I have had no bad luck with them, other than not getting the eggs in time to hatch before. I've found almost a dozen eggs, but most were dead or otherwise empty. The last ones that hatched had a failure to thrive and didn't make it. I'm pretty sure some babies have also hatched in-situ and not made it. The parents were both wild caught and supply of them in general is very limited. They are very shy and can hide very well. When I first got them, I could go a week without finding them, and that was looking like every day. Incubating the eggs is just putting them on a cool shelf and watching them for a few weeks. The male has always been slightly older and lethargic, but I've had the pair for over a year now so that's good enough for me.
They're almost like permanent hatchlings, except not quite that bad. I've got a pair in a 40Gal terrarium that I just fill with plants in a 'bioactive' setup. I throw in a small tub of black soldier fly larva in every so often. They pupate and the chams eat the flies. That can last several months. Every so often I'll throw in some supplementary crickets. It may not be the "best" care, so either I'm doing something right, or they aren't as fragile as it seems. One thing I think helps is I have a fan that if it gets too humid, like 90-95 or more, it runs until it isn't.
If you can get the setup right with misters, lights, fans, then it's very easy. Getting the setup right might take a bit of research and cost. Make a fun environment with some good plants and drop them in. The biggest reason they aren't super common I think is they lay 2 eggs in a clutch and not 40.
i got a new frog... baby pacman... i'm not sure what color morph he is, does anyone know?
Jfc I've never seen an Egyptian uromatsyx in person and this thing is HUGE. The photo does not do justice at all. It looked like it could fight a dog and win.
>>5015073i think this is it, thank you!
>>5003532>>5003536Anyone know anything about Sand Boas in general?
>>5015061That lil' fucker is going to be difficult to keep healthy
>>5015152Not much other than them apparently being fairly easy to keep on top of
>>5013887Leachies don't like being handled and they're poop monsters. Otherwise, they're just like large crested geckos. Anything you read about cresties will most likely apply to leachies, albeit in a larger size. They'll be relatively tame outside of their enclosures, but may try to strike if you go and grab them while they're in their enclosure.
Got my blue tongue in a new enclosure. He seems fond of the ledges I built in.
>>5011670Keep it up, hope to see him without that spine visible relatively soon.
>>5015382Thanks anon. I am still waiting on the terrarium setup but I have been pretty lucky so far with the one I am looking at handling wise. Handled him in store a few times under owner supervision when on frog food runs and was able to get him to go from green pink to brown which is apparently a more relaxed state. Got some cloth to protect my hand in case I want to get him out and I am planning on only having him out briefly for feeding. What would you recomend on feeding technique? The owner likes to syringue feed him but I have heard you can also use a spoon or hold a pot
>>5015391One observation I've made is that the color change does not appear to have anything to do with mood, at least as far as I can tell. I've observed direct reactions to light, however.
In one case, I noticed that the portion of his skin which were obscured by shadow reacted by exhibiting a lighter pigment. As a result, he was split down the middle between light and darker shades, or 'fired up' vs. 'fired down'.
So, it's possible the color change could have just been a reaction to light.
>>5015391>>5015398Sorry, correction and answering your question - fired up, or darker shades, while under shadow.
As for feeding, I just do the usual feeding ledge with CGD in the cups. Fed every third day, though sometimes he'll refuse food. This could be because he had recently shed and is full of skin, or he's not into the flavor, or just because he forgot where the food cup was.
Hand-feeding can result in overfeeding, reliance on you for food, and excess stress, in my opinion. When I had hand-fed my leachie, it was always a 'fight' which resulted in him shitting on me maybe a third of the time.
As for amounts, mine is about 250 grams and 12.25 inches long, and he'll clear out one of those larger (2 inch width) cups in a single night.
The feeding ledge may need to be custom, propped up by other decorations in the enclosure, or just held up by a fuckton of magnets. The force generated by a leachie's jump will knock down any common commercially available ledge, including the double magnet ones.
>>5015398>In one case, I noticed that the portion of his skin which were obscured by shadow reacted by exhibiting a lighter pigment. As a result, he was split down the middle between light and darker shades, or 'fired up' vs. 'fired down'.That kind of makes sense. There was AC going in the shop while we had a heatwave, so it could have been that.
>>5015401>This could be because he had recently shed and is full of skin, or he's not into the flavor, or just because he forgot where the food cup was.I will keep that note of that with regards to shedding. When you say "forget", do they have...questionable intelligence, lets say?
>As for amounts, mine is about 250 grams and 12.25 inches long, and he'll clear out one of those larger (2 inch width) cups in a single night.Yeah mine might be less. I forget the locale variety, but he is a lot smaller than the standard species despite being 4 years old
>The force generated by a leachie's jump will knock down any common commercially available ledgeThat makes total sense. I learnt the hard way when during handling the lil' bastard decided to use my shoulder as a diving board
>>5015458I think tge locale might be nuu ana, but again I am not sure besides small size and pink banding on green.
I want a frog but I can't decide which frog is THE BEST frog. My criteria for judgement are the enjoyment to annoying maintenance task ratio, how obscure and expensive the preferred prey items are, and how mentally, emotionally and spiritually fulfilling it is to gaze upon the frog.
>>5015489>annoying maintenance task ratioThe maintenance is gonna be mainly misting, cleaning shit, and changing the water bowl.
>how obscure and expensive the preferred prey items areIt's a frog. If it moves, it's in the prey spectrum.
>how mentally, emotionally and spiritually fulfilling it is to gaze upon the frogbig fukken toad
>>5015458Mine is a larger brosse/nuu ana/nuu ami mix. Majority brosse, but even then, he's on the larger side of even that locale.
An average insular (nuu ana/nuu ami) might get up to 200 grams, 10 inches or so.
>>5015459Could be a blend, but at least definitely exhibiting traits of nuu ana for sure.
>>5015489African clawed frogs would be your best bet. Fully aquatic so need to deal with land shit, eats pellets so dont need to deal with live food, and they're pretty active and retarded (like biting your fingers). I recommend getting multiple because they're fun to watch.
>>5015551They're also ugly as sin, which could be a pro (in case you want something more 'exotic' by western standards), or a con because they won't have those typical, striking patterns you may find on things like tree frogs.
>>5015736I wouldn't call them "ugly" as much as "ridiculous"
>>5015802>kentucky mother of 2
>>5015385I miss my girl so much, my Ackie is a fucking Demon, I miss just having a lap lizard who I could watch tv with.
>>5015510I'm gonna get one of these guys soon hopefully, the issue is finding them captive bred since everyone has Captive Born or Wild Caught.
>>5014354If 4000 pound Titanoboa is real itโs probably pretty close to the absolute theoretical max that that body plan can sustain with that respiratory system and a semiterrestrial lifestyle. A fully marine snake in the absence of other air breathing marine predators might be able to grow larger yet, but 8 tons would be large for a Mosasaur, even, and a mosasaur respiration system would suffer less from the difficulty of clearing dead air from its lungs than the elongated snake body plan.
>>5015385For being such stocky lizards my blue tongue loves climbing, he's managed to get ontop of my desk and nightstand on his own and I still have no idea how. Wish I setup some ledges like you did with a DIY background, branches will have to do for now.
I think all turtles/tortoise eventually become evil
>>5016311The exception is snapping turtles. If one handles them in such a way that they feel secure, instead of in a way that triggers their hatchling bird fear instincts, they are the nicest turtles of all.
>>5016311counterpoint: these goobers
>>5016382That doesn't even look like a real animal. So cartoonish looking.
>>5016370Trvth. Snapping turtles are misunderstood. They become prehistoric puppies once you gain their trust.
>>5016502it would take a hell of a lot for me to treat a snapping turtle like this
>>5016770Alligator snappers in particular are incredibly tameable. So are komodo dragons.
The big reptiles are the smartest, generally, and easy to convince you're neither predator nor prey. Does not apply to crocodilians, you're always potential prey for them.
What automatic misters would you guys recomend for a terrestial frog? (Europe)
>>5016845Are mistking systems commonly available in Europe, or is that just a US thing?

Any love for African House Snakes? All that I know about them is that when they're young they can be a bit too hyper and moving around all the time, but once they get older they mellow out. I've also heard a lot of them are shipped directly from Africa so those ones have a lot of parasites

Anyone know if there's any data available to confirm or deny whether black soldier flies carry the same nutritional value / nutritional profile as the larvae?
I can't tell if I'm just a boomer now or what but some of the "Minumum enclsoure sizes" are just getting crazy to me. Bigger is always better of course but a Leopard Gecko can live in a 24x18x12 or something of that similar size, it's doesn't need a 48x18, that would be awesome for it and if you have the room yeah then do it but it's not gonna die in a 24x18.
Same with Stinkpots needing a 75 gallon? 1 or two would be fine in a 40 - 50 gallon if you know what you're doing and filtrate it right and have enough hiding spaces.
Bearded Dragons in a 6x2x2? Okay this one I might lean more to agreeing with but I think a 4x2x2 is fine as long as the dragon isn't held in their the entire time.
>>5018449If you speak to anyone who actually cares about their work in the herp pet trade they will tell you that enclosure size importance is exaggerated nowadays. For the vast majority of them a 3ft is plenty room (excluding large monitors or boas) for terrestials and a 3ft by 6ft for arboreals. Now, I want to make it clear that I am not saying this is the reason why the minimums are so large nowadays but larger minimums benefit two groups ulteriorly:
>Enclosure brands>Anti-herp ownership organisationsThe larger the minimum the larger the intial cost for enclosure investment. It also makes you invest more into stuff like substrate, bulbs and heat control systems, moisture regulators, UV lights ect ect. If you're an enclosure brand who has it's hands in these other products it is a net good across the board commercially. Anti-herp groups also benefit as it reduces the window for owners who can get a herp. They have done similar shit in past like making it illegal to keep certain feeders in countries they have lobbied for or to make live feedintg classed as animal abuse to have a knock-on effect of making herp ownership impossible. If you make it so you can't own a fucking rankin ethically without a 6ft enclosure that is going to make a lot of would be owners think twice about getting one and the fact that minimums are argued less from a material point of view of what would benefit the animal and more from "what is ethical" online is a red flag to me. If it meets the material demands of the animal it is inherently ethical, if it goes beyond the material demands it provides nothing. Again, I am not saying that is why minimums are bigger nowadays, but it is important to consider when you hear these sort of things with minimum measurements.
>>5018449A lot of it is really arbitrary, people nowadays just mindlessly parrot reptifiles (which tbf isn't a bad source) and call it a day, and a lot of times they don't even keep the animal they're scolding people about. I keep my crestie in a 18 x 24 and it's always seemed like a decent size for him to move around in and I have a ton of branches and cork hides, but apparently the new standard is 18 x 36 based on .... something.
People who are extremely anal about enclosure sizes aren't that big of a deal imo, yeah it's definitely annoying being called an animal abuser because you don't have an 8 x 4 for a hognose snake, but they're still a minority compared to the amount of keepers who have no idea what they're doing. It's a good thing that beardies aren't being kept in a 40 gallon or BPs in a 30 gallon that much (or at least as much) nowadays.
I think a lot of people feel guilty about keeping wild animals as pets and virtue signal to cope.
>>5018449If you have the capability to go above the minimum but donโt then you shouldnโt own the animal
