The repeated button presses are the gameplay. If you're not doing that, you're just choosing characters, stats and equipment. Grindan in Disgaea involves button execution to do quickly; Menu navigation, moving the characters into the exact same position each time, and doing that repeatedly to optimize your characters is a skill. Kind of like doing shoryukens in fighting games or speedrunning.
