I played Dota (the warcraft mod) for many years in the environment you're asking for.
Someone would make a game and random people would join, some games would say that it was for people a certain skill level (eg: no noobs).
The result was that most games were shit. In your head you think you're going to be fighting against people you're somewhat better than and you're going to jerk your pecker at carrying the game.
What would actually happen is that 50% of your team and enemy team will be worse than low difficulty bots. It would be like they're not playing the game.
That's not even getting into the amount of leavers and other grieving that happens in a heterogeneous skill environment.
Due to being coddled by skill based matchmaking you don't understand how bad the average player is. It's not fun beating up retards who can't fight back, it really isn't.
It's also not a given that these braindead players will be evenly distributed. You may well be one of a number of highers skill players taking part of the stomp, so you're not going to feel special for being oh so skilled, because the guy who's less skilled than you on your team can get as many kills against the patatoes as you.
Or it could be that you're the sole non-patatoe on your team against a lineup of competent.
All in all you're not going to have a fun time, you just don't know it because you were not around for pre-matchmaking multiplayer.
