Pic rel is a depiction of the laryngeal branches of the vagus nerve.
It's path makes sense in fish, but in the descendants of fish, all vertebrate land life, the nerve travels from the brain, around the heart, back up the throat and to the larynx. It's clearly a vestige of its evolution first in fish. Otherwise, would it not make sense to simply have the nerve avoid looping the heart?
