I'm not performatively hostile to furries because I got over my edgy teen phase in the 00s, but I don't identify as one even though I'm more of a degenerate than the average one probably is these days.
"Furries" are members of a particular internet subculture, what people would now call a "fandom," it's something that you opt-in to (or at least have to feel that you are a part of). I have always been put off by fundamental parts of this culture like "fursonas," fursuits, and other forms of generic unappealing anthro art, so I have never considered myself part of it.
If you take the position "wanting to fuck a Sonic character or a Pokémon is furry shit" I can't really dispute that, but at the same time there are plenty of normalfags who feel that way about at least one "furry" character, and calling all of them furries feels like casting too wide of a net and making the term meaningless.
