That's a concern of mine in Colosseum at the Edge of Reality, too. Some of the most powerful gladiators have serious personality issues or other red flags to worry about. And personally, I think a healthy team that comes together well - or good parents to raise (you) - is worth the initial investment.
(Unless you're deliberately picking a problem so that you can solve it later, of course.)
