There was never any chance of them working. For any economic policy you need to think a few steps ahead. If a company moves its production to the US and then the next president nixes the tariffs, it's just wasted a crapton of money for nothing.
The problem is the Republican party is now full of socialists and former democrats who prefer virtual-signal policies over rational ones.
