This opened the way for stuff like Barq's and A&W to come in, replacing the saffrole based recipes with wintergreen to create the "root beer taste" we know today.
Pepsi on the other hand was a direct competitor to Coca Cola the same way Dr. Pepper was with Moxie. Only, unlike Moxie, Pepsi had enough market staying power to survive, something that could be attributed to the fact it had no cocaine in it to hurt its formula when the companies Coca Cola had nearly sunk began to collaborate and form lobbiyng conglomerates to get the FDA to go after Coca Cola for its cocaine.
