It reeks of dev team politics to me. Who the hell starts a story with a question and then decides never to answer it? You didn't tell a story. SA1 is about Echidnas and Knuckles is the least relevant part of the whole plot. It's absolutely baffling. You can't tell me that was the plan from the start. Something happened there.
