My theory is that Jax only believes in character archetypes because Ragatha accidentally told him so in a failed attempt to comfort him in his early days in the circus.

I think Jax has a point, Caine becomes more unstable every time he is challenged, Caine is the director of the circus and the players are his main attractions, they are of no use to him if they do not fulfill their role.
