at first I thought he went hobo due to his wife dying, but then it turned out he was like that even before.
Still, it's probably a case of "dude in mediavalish fantasy setting being kind gross as you would expect" kind of realism.
The messy kind of beard made me think he will get shaved by somebody and it will turn out he is a dark bishie all the time under it (he looks it), but it has never happened over the years. Seems the author is fully committed to the slob image.
