- Groups of people just moved out to the middle of nowhere and they had to "make it work", it wasn't a means of trying something new you had to succeed or die
- You didn't have the chance of somebody who owned a plot in the middle saying "oh hey look I just got an offer from some real estate douchebag to sell my plot for a few million, yeah love you guys it's been so much fun i learned a lot ok bye", nothing like this ever happened.
- Modern society is deracinated by design and re-forging those ties in a community without some kind of extreme religious/ethnocentrism is very difficult. Even if you are there long enough that you have kids, whose to say those kids will stay in the area.
- Also thanks to modern society there are a million ways people can fuck each other over legally, we don't have any kind of "honor system" anymore.

You could however have a better go of things if everybody was trying to be either entirely or just mostly self sufficient, so that way if one person screwed up something it wont knock on to everybody else too badly.
Also, the only way you're gonna get communities like this again is if there's some big collapse, which is inevitable on a long enough timeframe I guess, but if you're wanting "in the next 5 years" type answers this is what I got.

My advice is this. 1 learn how to cook for real. meaning use staple ingredients like flour, rice, sugar, eggs, milk, chicken, salt, pepper ect. Staple foods are cheap if you shop around. 2. Get some 5gal gardening pots and grow your own spices, like mint, cilantro, and Parsley. If you do not own property start a real garden. A properly maintained garden will net almost all of the vegetables you will need for a year if you have a food dehydrator and a canner. If you are worried about protein raise rabbits.
