Maekawa had the opportunity to write Tails to be a more narratively relevant or interesting character in his subsequent titles. He refused to do that.
He also wrote Heroes Tails, one of the most hated depictions of Tails by Tailsbros. Heroes Tails doubles down on depicting the character as childish (which contradicts his classic era characterization by Judy Totoya and as seen in extended material from that time. If Tails is going to be treated as a 'child' in narrative, it's a child who is growing up and desires to be taken as more adult than they currently are. This is shown in SatAM, a contrastingly perfectly in character childish Tails depiction that understands the core premise of the character) and then proceeds to make Tails into a character who narratively jobs to both Knuckles and Sonic via him heavily relying on them for emotional support.
He also made Tails' counterparts in Secret Rings and Black Knight extremely dull and boring compared to every other counterpart character in that setting. Whose role is more-so as a tool for Sonic than anything else. His writing shares similarities with Flynn in that regard.
