I think the original was great for a lot of reasons besides creatively skirting around censorship limits. The problem is Adult Party Cartoon went overboard trying to be "adult" to the point of just being gross and unappealing without being funny. It sucked for a lot of other reasons too, like much worse pacing. Episodes dragged on like crazy. Even Stimpy's design and voice (Billy West didn't want to do it) got worse.
That said, APC isn't as terrible as I thought when it first aired. It has its moments, some memorable gags here and there. Fire Dogs II and Ren Seeks Help were decent in parts.
