He doesn't live on scraps all the time but he rarely has a regularly paying job. Outside perhaps book commissions and he travels a lot. Living somewhat frugally and making a little go a long way are skills he's had to learn. Essentially just stuff I imagine any adventurer would end up developing after a while if they don't come from some rich background or family.
