I think people have pretty much figured out the problem here, it's the self-inserting on part of the directors and the only story they have to tell is how their upper class California childhoods were only 98.999% perfect. Half the time it's just annoying complaining from them. And no one really cares. If anything that crushing reality is the very shit the audiences want the fantasy escapism from, they don't want their escapism to be...stupid shit that happens in reality.
But, no one actually within Pixar can see the problem here. To them the problem is that audiences are just plain not giving them money for making a 2 and a half hour trauma dump, and they will never ...ever understand why they cannot make a billion doing that.

More than the current very obvious reaction everyone expects when they see this. I'm wondering how many people who have pitched their ideas to studios and executive boards over and over again for years and have been continually shot down and rejected...only to see this shit somehow made it through a pitch meeting and got the greenlight. What the fuck are they feeling when they see this literal shit being announced. How can one really feel when they spend years writing down their heart and soul into a treatment and seen nothing but rejection...and then they see this got a greenlight?

That has to be some near suicide inducing introspection for half of them.

And then to keep on trying to have an industry carer, they are going to HAVE to pretend they love this and it's a great idea, if not being browbeat into having to defend it on social media in the near future.
