In the greatest irony, kiddy games are harder and have more mechanical depth than "mature" games.

Sony managed to promulgate the idea that their consoles are for a mature audience, and naturally since only kids care about appearing mature, they effectively got a monopoly over the pre-teens market. This is why they can get away with releasing IP's and games with very shallow mechanics that have more flash than substance.

Nintendo, being the actual adults they are and not caring about appearing mature for the sake of it, actually prioritizes good mechanics above all else, appealing to everybody and respecting the skillset of the player regardless of their age. Most broccoli zoomers wouldn't even get past DK Tropical Freeze. Kek. Sony almost cracked the code with Crash Bandicoot but alas Naughty Dog realized they can make much more money with far less effort by just duping kids with guns and edgy voice-acting.

It's no coincidence most highly regarded speedruns are Nintendo games.

It never made sense to me. All the best games being 2 clicks away to download for free and emulate, and the mechanics of said games having a lot of depth meaning you can always get better and be in competition with yourself, there's literally no reason to splurge on new consoles. I could play the DKC and Crash Bandicoot trilogy and keep getting better at the mechanics over and over and I'd have a blast doing so. And this is without even getting into mods/romhacks. I could play the infinite amount of Mario World romhacks and not even come close to the skill ceiling no matter how much I've mastered it. Barely any new games have the depth like they used to.

Not only that, focusing on a few games trying to master them makes you way better at video games and gives you tons of transferable skills between them, compared to jumping from game to game and being mediocre at all of them.

Sure 2 decades ago when developers were actually passionate about the games it made sense, but with how far emulating and computing has come since then, the appeal of new games has increasingly become less so. Games are way too expensive to be as shit as they are now.

People keep telling me DKC is easy. So what's a harder platformer then?

I love these games but the more I think about it, the weirder it gets knowing that whenever any other game series had a heavily westernized incarnation of the series it was hated. Also, king k rool is just sally acorn for barafags
