why are court sentences so inconsistent. shouldn’t he get less time than a cold blooded murder?

>turned his life around by becoming religious and adopting the kids of the woman he married while incarcerated
>people who kill others get 10 years all the time
why is the legal system so uneven with prison sentences like this. why dont politically motivated prosecutions ever get overturned for being unjust?
