Honestly, the only way this encounter wasn't going to end in a massacre would have been if Shmi had not already been on death's door but still seriously injured enough that Anakin had to sneak her out of the camp and back to safety. Any other scenario and he's going to be lopping off some heads.

I actually feel that's a "what-if" scenario that doesn't get discussed nearly enough by fans. What if Shmi hadn't died and Anakin hadn't slaughtered the village?
