I think there's been a bit of a sea change. People aren't as easily browbeaten or intimidated about not buying into trans ideology. Simple things like people at my work have spontaneously stopped signing off emails with their pronouns (something they started forcing us to do 4 years a go). It just stopped.
In regards to US college's, when you look at how quickly a lot of them capitulated to Trump you have to conclude that part of the reason was that a lot of academics and students were sick and tired of the constant identity politics melodrama and the culture of constraint it empowered.
They took it too far and pissed normal people off so much that they're flirting with authoritarianism.
