Chickens are vicious. Something I learnt recently is that fowl (chickens, ducks) are quite distinct and on a different branch than like 95% of the other birds, with a last common ancestor from about mid-cretaceous. There are about 50 current species from the ostrich/emu branch (which branched off even earlier), 500 fowls, but 10,000 of all the other bird species that all branched off at the end of Cretaceous.
