The real benchmark of determining someone GETS Gurm and ASOIAF is twofold

If you say yes to either of these questions, you don't get George or the unfolding message of ASOIAF.
If you think Winds needs to be split, then you don't understand that George can't split the books further without ruining the pacing of a three act story. ADWD is the close of Act 2, when the characters are in their most dire circumstances. Jon is dead. Dany is shitting herself to death alone in the middle of nowhere while her city is being besieged, believed to be doomed without her. Splitting the books further drags out the length of the storytelling, and George wants a concise ending that doesn't balloon into a longer series.
If you think the books are about honor being meaningless, then you didn't understand it. All you need to do is contrast Eddard and Tywin's deaths. Ned's coup failed and he died because of his honor. Tywin won the war because of his lack of honor. But the difference is that Ned's honor won his family generational loyalty, while Tywin's lack of honor won his family generational hatred and distrust. Everything is unravelling for the Lannisters as soon as Tywin dies, while the North bands together against all odds for the sake of saving "Ned's girl." Ned's honor may have cost him his life, but it will also save his children.
But of course it's understandable that many people fail to understand this when George himself is failing to finish his series where he can make the points clear on his own.
