The power of mages is greatly exagerated by people in online discourse, sure with enough Sphere dots you are God tier and could almost write your own chronicle, but the vast majority of characters is never realistically going to have anything even close to that amount of power and if the enemy can work some magic as well they are going to have a much harder time.
Mage abilities shine because of versatility and from the POV of the enemy, unpredictability, not raw power.
