Caim's lust for murder ultimately comes from seeing the people he cares about be harmed and killed. His murderous rage is both his coping mechanism and his solution to the problem. But despite this, he doesn't get lost in murder, he always continues to put the safety of those he cares about in priority. This is also why Angelus makes such a good companion to him, she reminds him of what he needs to protect, and is also someone Caim comes to want to protect beyond the reason of their shared life. It's the humanity behind Caim's murderous rage that makes him such a compelling protagonist. Also it's really fun to have a protagonist who just unapologetically murders his way through his problems.
