How similar is the remake to the original in terms of plot/characterization?

Could I play the sequel (original) right after or would I have to wait for that to be remade too?

I’ve yet to try any characters that aren’t Yuri, but I’ll give Patty a try whenever she joins the party. I enjoyed playing as Presea in Symphonia as a break from Lloyd, so if she’s anything like that I’ll probably have fun.

It’s been tricky getting used to the combat in these games, since I come from a mostly turn-based/ATB background. I like action games a lot but none of the ones I’ve played really feel like Tales. Closest thing I’ve played to it is probably FFXVI and I didn’t enjoy the combat there at all.
